Heading into the final match of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season, which also marked Thomas Tuchel’s last time in the coach’s seat, Bayern Munich faced Hoffenheim away and only needed to avoid defeat to secure second place. Due to numerous key players being injured, the Bavarians took to the field with a makeshift lineup and an unfamiliar 3-5-2 formation.

Bayern Munich had a perfect start when Thomas Müller assisted Mathys Tel to open the scoring in the 4th minute. Just 2 minutes later, Tel set up Alphonso Davies, who entered the penalty area and scored with a cross-shot to double the lead.

Bayern Munich seemed to be on their way to an easy match with 2 goals in the first 6 minutes, but in the 8th minute, a careless pass from Manuel Neuer led to a chaotic defense, allowing Maximilian Beier to narrow the gap for Hoffenheim. However, the Bavarians still managed to finish the first half with a lead.

In the second half, Bayern Munich had several opportunities to extend their lead but squandered them all, particularly Müller. In the 68th minute, the Bavarian defense fell asleep once again, allowing Andrej Kramaric to easily equalize. The “disaster” was just beginning at this point.

In the 85th and 87th minutes, Neuer had to pick the ball out of the net two more times, both from comfortable finishes by Kramaric, who completed his hat-trick in less than 20 minutes. Meanwhile, in a simultaneous match, Stuttgart demolished Monchengladbach 4-0, overtaking Bayern to claim the runner-up spot in the Bundesliga with one point more than the Bavarians.

For the first time since the 2007 season, Bayern Munich finished the Bundesliga outside the top 2, giving Coach Tuchel a disastrous farewell. Missing out on the runner-up spot also means Bayern Munich loses the chance to compete in the German Super Cup. If Bayer Leverkusen wins the DFB-Pokal, they will play the Super Cup against the Bundesliga runners-up.
