The goal at Old Trafford in the 37th round of the Premier League on the evening of May 12 helped Leandro Trossard reach the milestone of scoring against all the teams in the “Big Six”.
Arsenal “defeated” MU right at Old Trafford.
According to Opta, the Belgian player has scored a total of 17 goals (accounting for 44.7% of the total goals) against the 6 teams of the “Big Six”. This statistic was calculated when Trossard played for both Brighton and Arsenal.
Among them, Liverpool conceded the most goals from the striker under Arsenal’s umbrella. Following them are Chelsea (4 goals), Tottenham, Manchester United, and Manchester City with 2 goals each, and Arsenal (1 goal).
In the 2023/24 season, the 29-year-old striker scored against the aforementioned teams four times. It’s worth noting that Trossard wasn’t the primary choice in Mikel Arteta’s attacking lineup. Out of 33 matches played for the Gunners, Trossard started in the main lineup only 17 times.
In January 2023, Arsenal signed the Belgian player from Brighton for £27 million. Trossard was seen as an option to rotate the team by Arteta, filling in for Gabriel Martinelli when the Brazilian player lacked consistency.
Prior to this, there were doubts about Trossard when Brighton’s manager, Roberto De Zerbi, expressed concerns about the player’s training attitude to the media. Moreover, the 44-year-old coach consistently benched him.
Arriving in London with many doubts, Trossard proved to Arteta that he made the right decision. In his first 11 matches for Arsenal, Trossard contributed to 7 assists.
The former Brighton star somewhat proved his worth through convincing performances. Trossard is a type of player capable of making breakthroughs with his individual technique, diverse ball handling, and finishing abilities. However, his weaknesses lie in speed and stamina.
Because of this, the Belgian international hasn’t fully gained the trust of the coaching staff, as he still rotates with Martinelli. Arteta seems to prefer deploying Trossard in the second half of matches to create breakthroughs with clever and assertive plays.
Trossard continued to shine, helping Arsenal regain the top.
Returning to the match against MU at Old Trafford, during a period where Martinelli hadn’t hit top form, Coach Arteta trusted Trossard to operate on the left flank for the Gunners. And it was this very player who secured a goal, helping Arsenal keep their hopes alive in the race for the Premier League title.
The goal against MU showcased Trossard’s sharpness to an impressive extent. He identified the blind spots of Casemiro and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Ultimately, the player with the highest conversion rate for Arsenal this season at 27.5% didn’t miss the opportunity to open the scoring in the match.
Former MU legend, Garry Neville, commented on Sky Sport: “Trossard did what every good winger does when attacking from the opposite side.”
Despite various experiments and changes on the left wing throughout the season, Arsenal’s attacking prowess still lacks stability compared to the opposite flank, where Ben White, Bukayo Saka, or Martin Odegaard are present. However, every time he steps onto the field, Trossard consistently contributes effectively to the Gunners’ overall gameplay.
