On the evening of April 28th, PSG officially became the Ligue 1 champion, after Monaco lost to Lyon 2-3 in round 31.
PSG wins the French championship for the third consecutive season.
On April 28th, PSG was poised to claim the title if they defeated Le Havre. However, under the guidance of coach Luis Enrique, PSG managed only a 3-3 draw. Nevertheless, PSG’s celebration was merely postponed by a day, as Monaco’s loss immediately secured PSG the title with 7 rounds remaining.
At this point, PSG’s lead over the second-placed team, Monaco, was 22 points, with only 7 rounds left in the season. PSG would become the French champions for the third consecutive season.
PSG continues to enhance the club’s status as the most traditional club in the French national championship, with 12 titles, two more than Marseille and St Etienne. Of these, PSG’s 10 championships came after the club was acquired and heavily invested in by Middle Eastern owners.
For Marquinhos personally, this marks his 9th Ligue 1 title, a feat unmatched by any player in history.
Following a season where PSG bid farewell to several stars such as Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Marco Verratti, and Neymar, the team appeared poised for decline. However, under Luis Enrique’s guidance, “Le Parisien” has become a cohesive unit, pursuing numerous titles with a possession-based style synonymous with the Spanish coach.
Currently, PSG has clinched the Ligue 1 title, won the French Super Cup, and still has a chance to win 2 more cups, including the French Cup and the Champions League. In the French Cup, PSG will face Lyon in the final, while they have also reached the semifinals against Dortmund in the continental arena.
With the Ligue 1 goal already achieved early, Coach Enrique has taken the opportunity to experiment with the lineup in recent months. Kylian Mbappe will leave the club at the end of the season, so he has continuously been on the bench to give opportunities to his teammates. The French striker only starts in the Champions League matches.
Despite not being a regular starter, Mbappe has still scored 26 goals in Ligue 1 and 43 goals across all competitions. If he wins the Champions League and goes far with the French national team in EURO 2024, he stands a good chance of winning the Ballon d’Or next year.
