Forward Kylian Mbappé shone brightly, scoring a brace to help PSG come from behind and defeat Barcelona with a score of 4-1 in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, securing an overall victory of 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals against Borussia Dortmund.
The brace also helps Mbappé rise to the top of the Champions League goal-scoring chart with 8 goals. Meanwhile, PSG are favored to clinch their first-ever title in the most prestigious club competition in Europe.
However, when asked if these successes would change his decision about his future with PSG, Mbappé responded: “No, no, no.” “I am proud to wear the PSG jersey because I am Parisian. I dream of winning the Champions League with PSG, and we will strive for Wembley (the venue for the Champions League final in the 2023-2024 season),” Mbappé explained further.
Mbappé’s contract with PSG will end on June 30. The future of the 25-year-old French star has long been determined after his decision not to renew his contract with the Parisian club. However, there are still efforts to persuade the player to change his mind, with PSG’s stellar performance in the Champions League being one of the reasons.
Nevertheless, Mbappé affirmed: “I am proud from the very beginning to wear the PSG jersey. I will strive until the last days to achieve the dream of winning the Champions League with the team. We have taken another step, but we must remain calm. There is still one more hurdle (the semi-final against Borussia Dortmund) before we can set foot on the Wembley pitch.”
After a quiet first leg, Mbappé shone brightly in the second leg by scoring a brace.
“Today, PSG defeated a very strong team. We played a fantastic game, with the effort of the whole team. After the first leg (PSG lost 2-3 to Barcelona at home with Mbappé not performing exceptionally), we worked hard with many new ideas and succeeded with a spectacular comeback, defeating Barcelona away to secure our place in the next round. It’s a great day for everyone at the club,” Mbappé shared.
According to Mbappé: “I’ve said it before, even if PSG had failed and been eliminated today, I would still always be proud to be Parisian. Therefore, the victory brings even greater pride. Right now, I am solely focused on PSG and together with the whole team, we aim for the Champions League title.”
According to French and Spanish media reports, Mbappé is expected to have a grand unveiling ceremony at his new club, Real Madrid, at the Bernabeu stadium just before joining the French national team to participate in EURO 2024 in Germany (taking place from June 14 to July 14).
