Bayer Leverkusen secures their first-ever Bundesliga title after a 5-0 victory against Werder Bremen.
In the 29th round of the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen secured a comfortable 5-0 victory against Werder Bremen on the evening of April 14, marking their first-ever touch of the Bundesliga championship.
This also signals the end of Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign, toppled by the “invincible” machine of coach Xabi Alonso.
The 5-star victory over Werder Bremen witnessed a completely dominant performance by the home team. They opened the scoring in the 25th minute of the first half, followed by a display of superb goals in the second half.
Granit Xhaka and Florian Wirtz alternated in scoring, securing a comprehensive victory and clinching the championship for the team.
All the famous football newspapers had to use the words “record,” “history” when mentioning Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable milestone this season. After 29 rounds, Alonso and his team earned 79 points, 16 points ahead of the “Bavarians,” and secured the silverware early with 5 rounds remaining.
Especially, Bayer Leverkusen is having an undefeated record-breaking season, as no team has been able to defeat them. European football has also not seen any team with a longer unbeaten streak than Alonso’s squad.
Fans flooded onto the BayArena pitch to celebrate the historic championship.
After 120 years, this is the first time Leverkusen has laid hands on the silverware. The Spanish strategist shared after the match: “It’s truly a fantastic moment for the club; the players have given their all for the team. It’s a great honor to have the opportunity to win this championship.”
Furthermore, Leverkusen also has the chance to secure the treble this season by appearing in the German Cup final and holding a significant advantage to progress to the Europa League semi-finals.
If this were to happen, it would indeed be a complete season for Xabi Alonso and his players. Currently, Leverkusen is on a 43-game unbeaten streak and has the opportunity to extend this record in the future.
This title also ends Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign, a remarkable milestone in history.
The Bavarian “Reds” couldn’t do anything against Xabi’s perfect machine. It’s a pity for striker Harry Kane as this could be another year without any club-level silverware.
