When Arsenal was denied a late penalty against Bayern Munich in their Champions League match, referee Bukayo Saka became enraged.
Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka let out his frustration after the team’s 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich ended without him getting a last-minute penalty.
Replays showed Manuel Neuer hauling the winger down, but referee Glenn Nyberg declined to award the Gunners a spot-kick in stoppage time.
The match official finally blew his whistle as play progressed, although it was at full time, which infuriated the Arsenal players.
Saka was one of the most enraged when he questioned the referee over the decision, which was not reviewed by VAR.
Rio Ferdinand and Martin Keown were shocked by the choice, but he wasn’t the only one.
“I thought all day long that it looked like a penalty from where we were,” Keown said to Laura Woods on TNT Sports.
“Saka is suspected of putting his foot in the direction of the ball, although goalie Neuer’s movement is actually in that direction.
“He simply steps up and issues the challenge. That is a daily fine in my opinion.”
With bitter retort, Ferdinand said, “How has not been given!? That’s unbelievable, considering VAR and all. It’s unbelievable to me. Neuer is a man with a life there.
“Saka has proven to be Arsenal’s most threatening player. There is a penalty because he is racing through. I have my hands on top of my head while I wander about in shock.”
3Neuer might consider himself lucky not to give away a penalty
Saka was incensed over the choice to forgo a penalty.
Even though they were mostly in control of the game on Tuesday night, Arsenal allowed Bayern to take the lead before fighting back in the second half.
Saka had given the Gunners the lead early on to fire up the Emirates, where Bayern supporters were not permitted, but the German powerhouses equalized thanks to a back-end error.
After Leroy Sane was fouled in the box, giving the England international the opportunity to score from the penalty spot, Harry Kane had his say, almost unavoidably.
After halftime, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard combined to score an equalizer for the Belgian, giving Arsenal a chance to rally.
Bayern, though, may count themselves fortunate following Saka’s 95th-minute penalty appeal denial.
