Controversy surrounded Arsenal’s penalty against Brighton.
The first half penalty awarded to Arsenal infuriated Brighton supporters.
Arsenal’s penalty against Brighton caused controversy
Referee John Brooks immediately pointed to the penalty spot when it was determined that Tariq Lamptey had fouled Gabriel Jesus in the penalty area. VAR looked into the matter again. Despite Lamptey being the first to touch the ball, the referee’s ruling stood.
Lamptey touched the ball and then swept it into Gabriel Jesus’s legs.
Bukayo Saka opened the game by effectively using the penalty. But when the referee awarded the away team a penalty, Brighton supporters became quite irate.
“The point of impact was outside the penalty area and Lamptey also touched the ball,” a supporter remarked. There was no need for a punishment.”
“Lamptey gets a penalty when he touches the ball while Odegaard doesn’t play basketball,” a second individual joked. I understand.
Jason Cundy, host of the talkSPORT channel, also took issue with the referee’s ruling.
“It was a poor choice. You see it as a penalty when traveling at a normal speed. But Lamptey’s touch with the ball is visible in the slow motion. Lamptey’s tackle wasn’t very good, and he made the referee decide what to do. But I believe that VAR ought to step in in this case. It never carried a penalty.
In the competition for the Premier League championship, Arsenal is still in a strong position. Arteta’s team returned to the top of the rankings with the victory over Brighton. Despite having one more point than Man City and Liverpool, they have a better goal differential.
